- Overall Conclusion
Puppies naturally explore the world with their mouths, they are learning everyday and as they start to gain more and more freedom and autonomy, with this, comes chewing. Teething can be painful for a puppy which is one of the main reasons they seek out items to chew. In addition the chewing process helps to strengthen the jaw, keep teeth clean and relieve boredom.
Anyone who has ever adopted a puppy or young dog knows all too well you can never have enough chews or toys to keep them entertained. Suddenly nothing can be left within your puppy’s reach and shoes, corners of furniture, TV remote controls, suddenly appear to have tooth marks in them or worse.
There are many different puppy teething toys on the market and we want to know what really does work. What will keep your puppy from chewing furniture? What will help them through the painful teething process? What will keep them amused and be far more appealing than socks, shoes, and anything left within reach of your furry baby?
There really is only one way to find out!
5 Teething Toys Thoroughly Tested And Reviewed
These 5 toys: Benebone Puppy Tiny 2 Pack Durable Dental Chew, KONG Puppy Toy Natural Teething Rubber, Rosewood Nylon Dog Chew, Wildfang Natural Chewing Root and Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy X-Bone.
Which one’s got Max’s tail wagging in particular? Max is an energetic, confident, 16 week old puppy who like all puppies loves to chew. And what did the other dogs think? Chica, Nero and Kay couldn’t leave all the work to Max could they? Let’s see what they thought of these 5 teething toys.
Benebone Puppy Tiny 2 Pack Durable Dental Chew
This puppy pack contains a dental chew with teeth cleaning ridges as well as an easy to grip wishbone. The ridges are visible on the dental chew and the slight curve to it’s shape makes it easier for a puppy to get their mouth around it and have a really good chew. The wishbone is a fantastic shape for a puppy to be able to wedge between their paws and get stuck in.
We wanted to check the bones bacon flavour so had a good sniff, we did stop ourselves at actually tasting them and left that to the dogs. They do in fact have a strong bacon scent – perfect for enticing a puppy to start chewing.
As you can see from Max in these pictures, he really got to grips with both the Benebone dental chew and the wishbone. Max was so focused and completely absorbed in chewing both the dental chew and wishbone, which given all the distractions for him at the shelter, is quite a rare occurrence. Normally there is something or someone to distract him, especially when we start taking photos. But Max did not for even a split second consider letting these bacon flavoured chews out of sight, or mouth in this case!
The bones are made from nylon which is a hard, tough material. These claim to be softer than the adult version which would be too hard for a puppy’s developing teeth. Nero absolutely loves Max and watches him with a hint of amusement and teaches him to be as cool a dog as himself. Nero, being so intelligent and wise of course wanted to ensure the Benebone chews passed his thorough testing process.
As you can see in the pictures below, even after Nero had a really good chew, with full force and enthusiasm, he hardly made a dent in them. Nero absolutely loved these too and both shapes of the wishbone and the dental chew are cleverly designed for an easy grip.
Even after Nero’s lengthy and enthusiastic chew there were no sharp edges or signs of breaking but we would advise you to keep an eye on the bones just for extra peace of mind.

Will these last forever? No. But having also tested these with Nero, there is absolutely no doubt they will last for many, many, many weeks and your puppy will have hours of satisfyingly tasty chewing time.Check Price on Amazon
KONG – Puppy Toy Natural Teething Rubber
Phew thank goodness Max is not one of those boys who refuses to touch anything pink haha! Note to humans, check the colour before ordering, these are also available in blue, don’t tell Max though!
Unlike some of the other teething toys Max, Chica, Nero and Kay tested, the puppy Kong isn’t flavoured. But this is the fun part for you. Oh yes, you can fill the Kong with all sorts of goodies for your puppy to enjoy getting out of the toy by licking and chewing. From tasty treats and meat to kibble and peanut butter. You will soon find out what your gorgeous puppy loves and which treats will have them maneuvering themselves into all sorts of strange positions to gain access to them.
Max was fascinated with the Kong chew toy. It rolled around as Max attempted to lick out all of it’s yummy contents which made it more challenging for him and subsequently also took more time. The rubber on the Kong chew toy is really tough and despite really enthusiastic chewing, licking, prodding with paws, not a scratch or a mark appeared on the surface.
Chica was not going to sit back and let Max have all the fun. Oh no. As soon as Max’s eyes were turned, Chica slowly crept in and oh so very discreetly took the Kong puppy toy away to investigate. There is a reason her nickname is ‘Cheeky Chica’!

Rosewood – Nylon Dog Chew
As with all the other flavoured chews we gave to the dogs to test, we checked the Rosewood Nylong dog chew for the scent of chicken it describes as having. There is definitely a hint of chicken smell but not as strong as some of the others the dogs tested.
The Rosewood nylon chew is very simple in design, it is a white chicken flavoured bone. The simplicity did not reduce it’s popularity!
For a teeny tiny split second we felt sorry for Max as he watched Kay with his ‘please can I have a go now’ eyes. Then we remembered all the fun Max is having testing all these puppy teething toys and chews. Oh okay, we confess, we did fall for Max’s eyes and gave him the Rosewood nylon chew. It was really good to see 14 year old Kay enjoying it though! Never too old for a puppy chew.
Max eye’s eventually won us over and we of course gave him the Rosewood nylon chew to test. Max loved this chew as did our gorgeous cheeky Chica. The bone shaped edges on both end make it easy for puppies and dogs to grip with their paws and hold whilst they enjoy chewing.
Similarly to the other two nylon chews the dogs tested, the good thing is the nylon doesn’t splinter, this however does not mean it is indestructible. Little fragments of the chew will come off when chewed.

A very simple flavoured chew that appealed to all three testers, Max, Chica and Kay. The Rosewood flavoured nylon chew is tough, great value and provides an enjoyable chewing experience for puppies and older dogs alike.Check Price on Amazon
Wildfang – Natural Chewing Root
Admittedly we didn’t get excited unpacking the Wildfang chewing stick as just like the picture shows and as expected it looks like a stick and is essentially a stick. Do not be put off however by it’s simplicity! Think of all those times you have had to take a stick from your puppy or dog’s mouth for fear of it splintering and getting stuck in their mouth or throat.
The Wildfang is 100% natural, it smells of wood and has no added scent or flavour and it doesn’t splinter. In theory this chewing stick is genius for all those stick loving chewers out there. Is it really though?
Both Max and Nero absolutely loved the Wildfang chewing stick. It did take Max slightly longer to show any interest compared to some of the other products he tested. Once he discovered this stick though, Max remained fully absorbed and concentrated on chewing it. When chewed small wet bits of wood fall off but not in splinter form. The size and sturdy diameter makes the stick easy to hold with even the smallest paws or the biggest as the case may be. Over to Nero!
Yes Nero did not want to be left out and as you can see has a rather more energetic approach and chewing style to Max.

Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy X-Bone
Is it strange that us humans get excited when we see toys for dogs? Out of the 5 puppy teething toys this caught our attention the most and we definitely had high high hopes for this to be popular with Max and some of the other dogs. Of course the bright colour does help make it eye catching as well as the different ridges aimed to clean teeth.
Before handing the Nylabone chew over to the dogs to test we checked to see if it does have the beef flavour scent and yes it absolutely does smell strongly of beef!
Chica immediately took the nylon chew and took it off to have a good chew behind her kennel. Once again Chica demonstrated her unique “bottom in the air£ chewing style. The nylon material is strong and even after a really long and enthusiastic chew, there wasn’t a tooth mark in sight. Chica really got the hang of how to hold it and the curved design of the chew made it easier for her to hold one end with her paw whilst chewing the other.
Max on the other hand didn’t show any interest at all in the chew and we had to spread peanut butter on it to entice him to even go near the Nylabone. As soon as the peanut butter was licked off, Max lost interest and didn’t want to chew it. Perhaps the texture which felt the most plastic wasn’t as appealing? Of course this is a human hypothesis and merely a guess.

A mixed reaction to the Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy X-Bone from our two testers, Chica and Max. Whilst Chica loved it, Max turned his nose up and showed no interest whatsoever. The Nylabone chew is tough, is durable and will appeal to many dogs.Check Price on Amazon
Max was thoroughly exhausted after all the chewing, testing and passing on his feedback to us. He definitely earned his much needed nap! Meanwhile we suspect Chica is still busy working her way through all the different teething toys – haha! There really is a chew for even the fussiest of puppies and/or the toughest of chewers. With prices starting from as little as £3.66 for the Rosewood nylon chew and chews that are toys as well, there really isn’t an excuse for your puppy to be chewing furniture or your favourite pair of shoes!
