Dog poo bags, now this may not be the most glamorous of products to review, we definitely agree with you there. But all dogs poo and all dog poo needs clearing up. The process needs to be as quick, efficient, mess free and as hygienic as possible.
We of course have the candidates ready and waiting with a lot of dogs at the shelter, and we spend a lot of time cleaning up after them on a daily basis. This of course isn’t our favourite task, but needs must and without wanting to sound big headed (can we be big headed about picking up poo?) we are self professed experts in this field. If only we had kept track of how many tons of dog poo we picked up on a yearly basis, now that would be interesting – or not!
So we have the poo bags ready, we have the dogs, deep breath, let’s do this. Thank goodness we are now grown adults and no longer giggle at the word poo every time we hear it, some of our dogs however (Jean we won’t mention your name) still find it hilarious.

We bought five different packs of poo bags, Earth Rated Dog Poo Bags, Amazon Basics Dog Waste Bags, My AlphaPet Compostable Dog Poop Bags, Bags on Board Strong – Scented Poop Bags and Greener Walker Poo Bags.
Every day one of the first things we do upon arrival at the shelter is cleaning all the dogs kennels. All of our kennels have little stones and the land within the shelter is typical Algarvean rugged countryside.
Poo bags are an essential item for our shelter and we need them to be strong, easy to open (there is nothing worse than spending hours trying to open the bag, well other than the bag ripping and our hands covered in poo!!) and for them to be leak proof. This is quite a lot to ask for from a poo bag and this is before we mention the nice extras such as the bags being scented, having tie handles and being eco friendly.
Earth Rated Dog Poo Bags
Really great first impressions as we got a roll of these Earth Rated Poo Bags out of the packaging. We were instantly hit with a lovely lavender fragrance (which makes a change from some of the other smells we are greeted with in the morning). As well as the really nice smell, these bags have a very sturdy and soft feel to them. They are easy to tear from one another and require minimal to no rubbing together to open.
Gau Gau sits proudly and thanks Patricia for keeping his kennel clean with the help of the Earth rated poo bags that we used in his kennel. We encounter all sorts of poo and it is so important for us to not have one of those really horrible moments when your realise your fingers have pierced the poo bag – really not nice! We used a full roll of these bags and are very very relieved to say that not one ripped. Phew!
Another positive for these bags is that they are recyclable which of course is hugely important given the amount we get through on a daily basis.

We loved these bags, not only because of the lavender smell, but also because they open so easily, do not rip, are big enough to tie closed and are really soft as well.

The Amazon Basic Dog Waste bags are definitely not to be overlooked. We brought a box of 300 bags which have 15 bags per roll and also come with a handy clip on dispenser. The bags are of good quality, they are easy to tear one from another, very easy to open and to turn inside out. Out of one roll not one bag ripped from picking up poo of all sizes from a stone floored kennel. We were pleasantly surprised by these bags.
For those who want their poo bags to be discreet and to not scream “poo bags” the colour black is perfect and by using the clip on dispenser on your dog’s lead on to you waist band, you don’t have to rummage around in your bag or pockets trying to quickly access a poo bag.
There is even an arrow telling you which side of the bag opens. This may sound like a small point but when you are in a hurry to pick up poo this is definitely a plus point.
These bags are also available with an EPI additive which is designed to help the bags break down faster than a standard bag.

The AlphaPet Compostable Poo Bags are completely biodegradable which is a huge plus in our eyes. We get through hundreds of bags a week so knowing these breakdown within 90 days leaves our conscious feeling much lighter.
The feel to these bags is soft but they are thinner than some of the other bags we tested. Perhaps a rather small point to note but when starting a roll, the sticky label that keeps the bags together tended to rip the first bag leaving a hole.

Summary
The AlphaPet Compostable Poo Bags will be a favourite among environmentally friendly dog owners. The only drawback is the price but this is to be expected with a fully biodegradable product. The bags despite the first one on every roll tearing are of good quality, thickness and strength.

The Bags on Board dog poo bags are great value. They are how they are described, scented and strong. There are 14 bags on every roll and they are easy to to tear apart and despite being thinner than some of the other bags we tested, they stood up to their purpose and did not break. The scent is pleasant and not too strong.
These bags are bigger in size than the others we tested so if you prefer a bigger bag these are the ones for you. We found them a bit too big and a little too transparent, a little similar to disposable nappy bags. So if you don’t like feeling the heat of your dog’s poo you may not want to use these.

These environmentally friendly Greener Walker Poo Bags are ideal for the eco conscious dog owners. Made from a Bio corn starch blend you can use these without any guilt of what your bag is doing to the planet.
As with all our other bag tests we used these to pick up dog poo from inside the kennels which are covered in small stones.
Pebbles kept a firm eye on us to check we were cleaning her kennel properly and not leaving any mess behind. Big enough to cover our hands and wrists, these bags are strong and did not tear during any of our ‘picking up poo’ tests.
The only time the bags did tear was upon the initial opening to begin the roll. The sticky label holding the roll together tore the first bag. A minor point! Some other biodegradable bags may be thinner but this wasn’t the case for these. They material is soft (which can make the two sides stick initially and harder to open), thick and stood up to the task.

The Greener Walker Poo Bags are excellent value for money as well as being eco friendly. Slightly thinner in material than some but this did not affect their efficiency.

Well that was an interesting product to test. Despite this being a massive part of our daily routine, we did have a lot of giggles with the dogs and being fully honest, which of course is what a review should be, we strangely enjoyed testing all 5 different dog poo bags.
The range of bags tested vary in price starting as low as £4.84 going up to £18.99. From basic, do the job poo bags to eco friendly, scented ones. Our dogs being fully impartial in the whole testing process, feel there is a bag for everyone here. From the occasional dog poo bag user to the hard core, environmentally friendly one. For those with a sensitive nose to the unpleasant smell of dog poo, to dog owners who prefer the natural smell to the scented bags.
It would be rude of us to end this review without thanking the key participants without whom we wouldn’t have been able to test so thoroughly the 5 different poo bags.
